Starting a business is exciting, but it can also feel like your to-do list is getting longer by the minute.

You’ve got your business name, finances, insurance, equipment and about a hundred other things to think about. Then someone mentions branding, and suddenly you’re wondering whether you need a logo, website, business cards, brochures, social media graphics and goodness knows what else!

The good news? You don’t need everything at once.

After more than 30 years of helping new businesses get off the ground, I’ve learnt that the trick is knowing what to prioritise, what depends on your business and what can wait until later.

Start with a good logo and a consistent identity

Your logo is usually the first piece of the puzzle. It’s going to appear on almost everything you produce, so it’s worth getting right from the outset.

A professionally designed logo should be distinctive, easy to recognise and versatile enough to work across print and digital materials.

But your brand identity doesn’t stop at the logo.

Colours, fonts and the overall look and feel of your business all play a part in creating a consistent identity. If you’re not sure where to start, don’t worry – that’s where I come in! I can help you choose the right combination to suit your business, so everything looks and feels connected, from your website and social media to your business cards and other marketing materials.

You don’t necessarily need an enormous set of brand guidelines, but having the basics sorted early makes everything else much easier.

What about a website?

For many new businesses, a website is one of the most useful investments they can make.

It’s somewhere potential customers can find out what you do, see examples of your work and get in touch. Unlike social media, it’s also a space where you have much greater control over how your business is presented.

That doesn’t mean you need a huge website with dozens of pages.

A straightforward, well-designed business website covering your services, background and contact details can be a perfectly good starting point.

I’d also recommend securing your preferred domain name early, even if you’re not quite ready to build the website.

Which printed materials do you actually need?

This really depends on the type of business you’re launching.

If you’re regularly meeting customers, business cards might be useful. If you’re promoting a local service, leaflets or flyers could help spread the word.

Other businesses might benefit from branded stationery, presentation folders or a brochure explaining their products and services.

And some start-ups won’t need much printed material at all!

I can help with the design and printing of these materials, but I’d always recommend starting with what you’re genuinely going to use rather than ordering a mountain of stationery simply because you think you should.

Don’t forget your digital branding

Once you’ve got your logo and brand colours sorted, it’s worth carrying that same look across your online presence.

That might mean branded social media profile images, cover graphics, an email signature or simple promotional graphics for your posts.

You don’t need a complicated marketing campaign from day one. Just make sure customers can recognise the same business wherever they come across you.

And if you’re planning to have your logo embroidered onto clothing or used on vehicle signage, the correct logo artwork can be supplied for the specialist producing it.

What can wait until your business grows?

Plenty!

A glossy catalogue, exhibition display or extensive collection of promotional materials might be useful further down the line, but there’s no point spending money on things you don’t currently need.

As your business develops, you’ll get a better idea of what customers respond to and which marketing materials are worth investing in.

The important thing is getting the foundations right so you can add to them without having to redesign everything from scratch.

Need a hand getting everything together?

I know how overwhelming those early stages can be, which is why I’ve put together my New Business Start-Up Packages.

They bring together the design essentials you might need to get started, from bespoke logo design and brand styling to business stationery, promotional materials and website design.

And they’re flexible, so you can choose the combination that suits your business and budget rather than paying for a load of extras you don’t need.

Whether you’re starting with a logo and business cards or planning a complete launch, I’m happy to help you work out what makes sense.
